One question every person asks in his or her lifetime is, "What am I here on earth to do?" Or in others words, "What is my purpose?" I have searched for the answer to this question for many years. I looked high and low and I got caught up on details most of the time. I would ask God, "What have you created me to be?" or "What is my calling?" In these questions I looked for specifics like, one day you will be a great leader in this certain location doing exactly this thing. The problem with trying to find my "specific" purpose was that I was so caught up in my future that I would not see what God was doing in my life at the moment.
Often times this search for purpose would come up in conversations. I love talking about passions and what God is doing in our lives and the question, "What do you feel God calling you to?" would often come up. I ask this because I believe that God calls everyone to specific things but this belief overshadows what I have found God has called us to first and foremost.
"And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment -- to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ." Ephesians 1:9-10
The mystery of His will is that we would be united together under Christ. It is that there would be no more division and everyone would become united with Christ. This starts with us being united with Christ first. God's will for us it to be with Him!
"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Along with being united with God we are called to be joyful ALWAYS; pray CONTINUALLY; and to give thanks in ALL circumstances. Joy here is not just happiness but it is a state of the soul which is given from God. Praying continually means that we are constantly in conversation with God. And giving thanks in all circumstances calls us to always acknowledge the Truth of Jesus Christ. I don't know about you but to me that sounds like a life which is led by the Spirit.
Our purpose here on earth and our calling from God is to be in relationship with Him first and foremost. God will make the specifics like; what we should do for a living, where we should live, and directions we should move toward, known to us as we are obedient to Him and surrender our will over to take on His will for our lives.
I used to think that God would reveal what his plans for my future were years in advance. Now, I am realizing that I need to be obedient and daily surrender my plans for His and he will direct my path. I may not know the specifics of what God has called me to but I do know that if I seek God first, those plans will be revealed!
"Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." Psalm 25:4-5

This is something I've had on my mind a lot as well. I've been blessed to know the call God has had on my life since I was very young. God showed me what He had planned for me in the future- He just didn't show me how to get there. Sometimes I think of it as God lighting a lamp on the top of a dark mountain, but then only illuminating the path step-by-step on the way to the top. It involves a great deal of trust and I've had to learn not to be to caught up seeking the specifics just like you. Sometimes I do forget that one of the most important thing is simply being in a relationship with God on a daily basis and seeking His will for that day.
Thanks for posting this. I needed a reminder. And don't ever be discouraged about not knowing your future. Sometimes I think it would almost be easier if I didn't know God's future plans for me, because then I wouldn't frustrate His current plans trying to make His calling come to pass prematurely. Just know that He IS revealing it to you. And His timing is perfect. : ) Right now "God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey Him." (Philippians 2:13) Take comfort knowing that the plans He has for you are good: Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." God bless, Will. And may I say that I believe that God does have some very special plans for your life. He's working in you now to make them come to pass and will reveal everything to you at the right time.
I think of it like this. When someone calls you, it means "come here". Seems like sometimes when people talk about "calling", they are really talking about sending.
duuuude this is legit!!!! thanks for this, I needed to hear this. Love you brotha!!
